With the Ancient World exhibit complete and lunch coming to an end, they had one more room to explore before the gift shop. Paislee had done well looking around at the large maps and Marnie had thoroughly enjoyed her mozzarella and tomato sandwich and chocolate doughnut that Antoni had prepared for her. As she popped her brown bag in the recycle bin, she smiled at the thought of stopping by the bakery after work to catch up with Antoni and Jovi to tell them about her day rather than rush through or making an excuse to head straight home to see Josh. There was nothing wrong with being giddy about getting home to see your other half but Marnie was beginning to realise how often she’d cancelled plans with her family to be with Josh because Josh hadn’t been one to make an effort with them.

‘Right, we’ve got one more room to look at,’ Marnie explained to Paislee and Mason as the group stood to gather by Mrs Oakley at the door.

‘They have toys?’ Paislee asked. ‘They have dinosaurs?’ She looked up at Marnie with her big blue eyes full of intrigue.

‘No, this is the Egyptian room. We’re going to see the pyramids and the mummies, like Miss Olsen has shown you in class. Then we’ll see the toys,’ Marnie informed the two friends.

‘I want to see the dinosaurs,’ Paislee expressed. Marnie could hear the frustration in her tone and with a gentle wave of her hand down by her hip, encouraged Mason to keep walking, hoping that the pyramids would be enough of a distraction to keep Paislee interested for ten more minutes before it was their turn in the shop.

‘We’ll see the dinosaurs after the mummies. Ten minutes, OK?’ Marnie said.

‘Oh whoa, cool. Look at this, Paislee.’ Mason said when the Egyptian tombs came into view. Marnie couldn’t exactly fault Paislee for not caring for the mummy exhibit; she wasn’t really a fan herself. The mummies and bodies had scarred her for life as a child. Now she was grinning and bearing it, while trying not to look at the objects for too long. She kept her eyes on Paislee to avoid looking at the bandaged relics of humans. She had shown Paislee books in class to prepare her for this exhibit. Paislee wasn’t one to get scared and would happily watch a T-Rex munch on a carcass, so she wasn’t too worried about her reaction to the mummified people. The children were a lot braver than her. Horror movies, zombies and the like, were not Marnie’s thing.

Mason’s enthusiasm seemed to grab hold of Paislee for a moment as her eyes scanned over the new room. However, the moment they landed on the mummy lying down in a class cabinet, Marnie saw the little girl’s face morph into panic.

‘I don’t like it,’ Paislee shouted. She had remained glued to the spot by the door, but she turned to face Marnie who in trying to be encouraging was standing two metres ahead by the pyramid display.
